EYEMOUTH

Volume 9 · 134 words · 1860 Edition

a small seaport and market town of Scotland, county of Berwick, situated at the mouth of the Eye, 7 miles north of Berwick. It is a place of considerable antiquity, and had a fort of great strength, which, however, has been destroyed. Being the Scottish harbour nearest to England, it was a place of importance in the wars between the two countries. In later times it was for many years famous for smuggling; but that illicit traffic has been long suppressed. The harbour has been much improved by the erection of a breakwater, and vessels may now enter and depart at all times of the tide. Eyemouth has a weekly grain market, and extensive granaries have been erected near the pier. Pop. of parish (1851) 1488, many of whom are engaged in the fisheries.
