a town of the United States, Massachusetts, 46 miles S. of Boston, situated on the Fall River, at its junction with the Taunton, which last falls into Mount Hope Bay, a branch of Narraganset Bay. The harbour on Taunton river is safe and easy of access, and has depth of water sufficient for the largest ships. Fall River has a large coasting trade, and is engaged in the whale and other fisheries. It has extensive cotton and woollen factories, bleaching works, foundries, &c., and communicates regularly with New York by steamers, and with Boston by railway. Pop. (1850) 11,522.
