Volume 9 · 127 words · 1860 Edition

or Famagusta, a seaport-town on the east coast of the island of Cyprus, occupying a low situation between two promontories, in N. Lat. 35° 7' 40", E. Long. 33° 59'. It was formerly strongly fortified, and on the land side was surrounded by a deep ditch and thick walls flanked with towers, but these have now fallen into decay. The palace, cathedral, churches, and other buildings, are mostly in ruins, and the town at present probably does not contain more than 200 inhabitants. The harbour was formerly good, but from the accumulation of sand at its mouth it is now only accessible to small craft. Famagosta occupies the site of the ancient Arsinoe. Under the Venetian rule it was one of the principal cities of the Levant.
