a fortified town of Bavaria, circle of Upper Franconia, situated near the junction of the Wiesent with the Regnitz, 16 miles S.S.E. of Bamberg. It has a castle, a collegiate and two other churches, synagogue, monastery, hospital, and considerable trade and manufactures. In the middle ages several diets and councils of the church were held here. Pop. about 3500.
