in the art of war, a small mine in which the chambers are placed from 3 to 10 feet under ground, dug under some work, fortification, or post, and charged with sacks of powder, or powder placed in a chest, and covered with earth and stones. They are very efficient in defending works, especially if placed near the foot of the glacis or ditch. The powder is fired, as in larger mines, by means of a saucisson. Fougasses are also formed by burying several loaded shells with the fuse downwards.
