(Digitalis purpurea), an herbaceous plant, inhabiting the temperate and southern parts of Europe. See Botany, vol. v., p. 202. Nat. Ord. Scrophulariaceae. The flowers of this beautiful plant are usually purple; but sometimes white. When fresh, it possesses a bitter, nauseous taste, and is violently emetic and cathartic. When prepared and administered medicinally, it has the remarkable property of diminishing the strength and frequency of the pulse, and is at the same time diuretic; hence it is much esteemed as a remedy in diseases of the heart and dropsy.
