a town in the Rhenish circle of Bavaria, 9 miles N.W. of Mannheim, and communicating with the Rhine by a canal 6 miles in length. It owes its rise to some Flemish Protestant refugees who settled here in 1562. It rose very rapidly, so that in 1577 it became a town, and in 1682 it was the third town in the Palatinate. It suffered severely in the wars of 1688 and 1794–5. The manufactures are considerable, including linen, silk, and cotton goods, porcelain, &c. Pop. 5000.
