Among the immunities granted to churches in ancient times, mention is made of the *fridstol*, i.e., "the seat of peace," or sanctuary, where criminals might find safety and protection. Of these there were many in England; the most celebrated of which were that at Beverley, and that in St Peter's church at York, granted by charter of Henry I.
