a market-town of Cheshire, near the Weaver and Mersey rivers, 10 miles N.E. of Chester. It has a fine old church, partly Norman, and a free grammar-school, savings-bank, graving dock, and flour mills. Pop. (1851) 2099, chiefly employed in the salt-works and cotton manufacture.
