a group of islands in Bass Strait, between Australia and Van Diemen's Land, consisting of four large and numerous smaller islands. Great Island, the principal, is about 40 miles in length by 10 in breadth; Cape Barren, Clarke's, and Preservation Islands, are the next in size. These islands are barren and unproductive, being sandy in the lower parts.
