Grecian Antiquity, the presents given to a bride on the eve of her marriage, when she was introduced by her parents or guardians to the members of the phratry to which her intended husband belonged. The ceremony of enrolling newly married women in the lists of their adoptive phratry was also called Gamelia. The object of this enrolment was to exclude strangers from participating in those rights of Greek citizenship to which they had no legal title. It also guaranteed the legitimacy of the children of persons who went through the necessary forms, and the validity of their claims to all the rights and privileges of citizens.
