a town of France, capital of a cognominal arrondissement, department of Allier, on the right bank of the Andelot, an affluent of the Allier, 33 miles S. by W. of Moulins. It was formerly surrounded by walls, and what remains of its old castle is now used as a prison. The vicinity is very pleasant, but the town itself is ill-built. It has an hospital, a tribunal of primary instance, and some trade in corn, wine, and cattle. Pop. (1851) 5349.
