a burgh of barony and river port of Scotland, county of Kirkcudbright, on the Fleet, about a mile and a half above its influx into Fleet Bay, and six miles N.W. of Kirkcudbright. It stands in a romantic valley, surrounded on three sides by well-wooded hills. Brewing and tanning are carried on, as well as cotton and soap manufacture. The river is navigable for vessels of 180 tons. Market-day Saturday. Pop. (1851) 1750.
