a township of Derbyshire, near the Manchester and Sheffield railway, 14 miles E.S.E. of Manchester. It is the chief seat of the cotton manufacture in Derbyshire, having in the town and neighbourhood above fifty cotton mills. It has also woollen and paper mills, dyeing, bleaching, and print works, iron foundries, &c. Pop. (1851) 5467.
