The district of which this town is the capital contains an area of 3506 square miles, with a population of 400,000. The principal crops of the district are cotton, tobacco, and sugar. Mustard also is said to be extensively grown. This district formed a portion of Bengal in 1765, when the British government obtained a grant of the Dewanny from the emperor of Delhi.
