in the state of Michigan, the largest river lying wholly within the state. It rises in the Washtenaw and Hillsdale counties by two branches, which unite in Jackson county. Thence it pursues a very winding course, generally in a westward direction, to Lake Michigan. It is about 270 miles in length, and is about 320 yards wide at its mouth. There are several smaller streams of this name in the United States.
