or Greifswalde, a town in the Prussian province of Pomerania, and government of Stralsund, on the Ryck, 3 miles from its mouth, in the Baltic, and 20 miles S. by E. of Stralsund. It is pretty well built, and is surrounded by promenades formed out of its old ramparts. It is capital of a cognominal circle, and the seat of several judicial tribunals. A university was founded here in 1456, but the number of students is inconsiderable, being in 1850 only 189. It has also a botanic garden, observatory, gymnasium, &c. There is a good harbour for small vessels at the mouth of the Ryck, and an active coasting-trade is carried on. It has building-docks, distilleries, salt-refineries, oil-mills, seaports, and tobacco manufactories. Pop. (1849) 12,715, besides 524 military.
