or Huamanga, a city of Peru, capital of the department of Ayacucho, on an affluent of the Apurimac, 140 miles W.N.W. of Cuzco. It was founded by Pizarro on the site of an Indian village of the same name, for the convenience of trade between Cuzco and Lima. It has a fine cathedral, several other churches, monasteries, nunneries, and a university. Pop. about 20,000.
