a town in the United States of North America, capital of Washington county, state of Maryland, near the W. bank of the Antietam Creek, 9 miles from the Potomac River, and 65 miles W.N.W. of Baltimore. It is the southern terminus of the Franklin railway, is well built, and a place of considerable trade. Pop. (1850) 3884. There are several villages of this name in the United States.
