town and parish in the county of Middlesex, 4 miles W. by S. of London, near the N. bank of the Thames, which is here crossed by an elegant suspension bridge. The parish church is a plain brick building with a low tower, erected in 1631. A new district church was erected in 1820. There are also chapels for Wesleyan Methodists, Baptists, Quakers, and Roman Catholics; two Roman Catholic convents; almshouses; and national and other schools. The parish is studded with numerous elegant residences, and the neighbouring grounds are chiefly occupied by nurseries and market-gardens, which furnish the metropolis with some of the choicest flowers and vegetables. Pop. of parish (1851), 17,760.
