It is about 2 miles from the Bristol Channel, where there is a landing quay lying under the cliffs, much frequented by fishing vessels. The parish church stands about a mile from the town, near the sea. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in fishing or in agriculture. Of Hartland Abbey (founded by Githa, wife of Earl Godwin) some portions of the cloisters still remain. Market-day, Saturday. Pop. of parish (1851), 2183.
