It was formerly a place of greater importance than at present, and had considerable manufactures of checks and fustians, which have now dwindled away. The weaving of silk, cotton, &c., is still to some extent carried on. The parish church is a large and ancient edifice. Pop. of parish (1851) 2535.

It stands on the Boston and Maine railways; and has manufactures of boots and shoes, woollen goods, bricks, silver-ware, hats, &c. Pop. (1853) about 3500.
