in Grecian Mythology, the name of a mysterious goddess, who, in many of her attributes, bore a strong resemblance to Diana. Her power was at one time so extensive that she was identified with several other deities, such as Proserpine, Ceres, Cybele, and especially Diana or Artemis. Her statues were set up in cross-roads and in front of houses. She was worshipped with peculiar honours at Athens and Ægina, where she was regarded as the patron goddess of the domestic hearth. The sacrifices offered to her consisted chiefly of black lambs, dogs, and honey. (See Diana.)
