HEILIGENSTADT

a town in Prussian Saxony, capital of a cognominal circle in the government of Erfurt, 32 miles E.N.E. of Cassel, on the Leine. It has a castle, gymnasium, normal school for Roman Catholics, five churches, and two orphan asylums. Its chief manufactures are woollen yarns and wooden clocks. Pop. (1849) 5240. Under the French Heiligenstadt was capital of the department of Harz.
