a small market-town of England, North Riding of Yorkshire, on the Rye, 21 miles N. of York. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in agriculture and the linen manufacture. Helmsley Castle, now in ruins, was built in the time of Edward I. and Edward II., and was taken and dismantled by Fairfax in the civil war. Pop. of township (1851) 1481.
