(Hyoscyamus niger), a narcotic plant of the nat. ord. Atropaceae, the Deadly Nightshade order. The juice has the property of causing the dilatation of the pupil of the eye; and it has long been used in medicine as a sedative and narcotic. It is said that swine can browse with impunity on this very poisonous plant. See Botany.
