a walled tower in Hesse-Darmstadt, capital of the province of Starkenburg, 16 miles S. of Darmstadt. It contains a church built by Charlemagne. On an eminence behind the town, and upwards of 1000 feet high, stand the ruins of the castle of Starkenburg, which has given name to the province. Pop. 4200.
