It is surrounded with walls, and has 4 churches, a gymnasium with an extensive library, an orphan asylum and several other charitable institutions. Its manufactures comprise linen, woollen and cotton stuffs, leather, and paper. There are iron mines and marble quarries wrought in the vicinity. Pop., including the two suburbs, about 8000.
