a market-town of England in the county of Durham, and 6 miles N.E. of the town of that name. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the coal-mines and iron-works. The parish church is a cruciform edifice in the early English style. There is a free grammar-school founded in 1574. Pop. (1851) 3224.
