a strongly fortified town of Belgium, capital of a cognominal arrondissement in the province of Liège, 17 miles S.W. of the town of that name. It stands on both sides of the Meuse, its two parts being connected by an ancient stone bridge. It has a strong citadel, cathedral, collegiate church, and town-hall. The chief manufactures are linen, paper, leather, and cast iron. It has also a considerable trade in corn, coal, iron, wine, &c. Pop. 9000.
