(the ancient Forum Cornelii), a town of the Papal States, legation of Ravenna, and 25 miles W.S.W. of the town of that name. It stands on the river Santerno and the Emilian way; and is surrounded by walls, with the protection of several towers and an old castle. It is a cathedral city, and contains numerous churches and convents, a college, hospital, theatre, literary academy, and public library. Imola is the centre of a considerable trade in wine and agricultural produce, and some manufactures of cream-of-tartar and woollen hosiery. Pop. about 10,000.
