("a prince with God"), the name given to Jacob at Peniel (Gen. xxxii. 28-30). After denoting first the patriarch Jacob, and from him the whole nation of the Jews, the name was applied to the ten tribes, after their revolt, in contradistinction to Judah. Since the Babylonian Captivity, the name of Jews, from the tribe of Judah, has been commonly applied to the nation. See Jews.
