a large island of South Australia, at the mouth of the Gulf of St Vincent, in S. Lat. 36°, E. Long. 137°. It is 95 miles in length from E. to W., and, with the exception of a narrow portion at its eastern end, is about 25 miles wide. Area estimated at 1790 square miles. The surface is for the most part covered with brushwood, with here and there clumps of trees. It contains numerous salt lakes. It was discovered by Capt. Flinders, and received its name from the number of kangaroos found on it.
