a parish and burgh of barony in the county of Stirling, Scotland, interesting as the centre of a remarkable religious revival in 1742-3, and on a smaller scale in 1839. The town, 12 miles N.E. of Glasgow, is ill built, and not remarkably clean. Pop. 3949, chiefly employed in hand-loom weaving.
