a fortress of Russia, very strongly situate on a small peninsula at the mouth of the Dnieper, on its W. side. Opposite to it is the fortress of Oczakoff: the two together entirely command the entrance of the river. Near Kinburn in 1787 the Russians under Suworoff gained a signal victory over the Turks. On the 17th of October 1855, this fortress capitulated, after a heavy bombardment of several hours, to a combined British and French force under Admirals Stewart and Bruat.
