a market-town of Lancashire, on the Preston and Fleetwood Railway, 8 miles W.N.W. of Preston. It is a place of considerable antiquity, and has a free grammar school of 1658. Pop. 2777, chiefly employed in sailcloth, sacking, and cotton manufactures.
