a fortified town of Russia, government of Caucasus, on the left bank of the Terek, about 60 miles from its mouth, on the Caspian. It carries on a considerable trade, being an entrepot for the traffic between Persia, Astrakan, and the interior. Its exports comprise wine, brandy, silk, oil of saffron, &c. Pop. (1849) 11,200.
