a town of Prussian Saxony, government of Erfurt, on the Saale, 19 miles N.W. from Erfurt. Its industrial population are employed in the production of silk, cotton, and woollen fabrics, gunpowder, saltpetre, starch, and other articles. A four-gated wall surrounds the town. Pop. (1849) 8279.
