Volume 13 · 74 words · 1860 Edition

in Grecian mythology, the son of Apollo and Stilbe, was the brother of Centaurus, and the husband of Orsinome, daughter of Eurynomus. From him the descendants of his sons, Periphas and Phorbas, who dwelt among the mountains of Thessaly, were called the Lapithae, and the name was afterwards extended to all the inhabitants of the country under their rule. The most notable event in their history was their quarrel with the Centaurs. See CENTAURI.
