(Turkish Yenitcher), a town of European Turkey, the ancient and modern capital of Thessaly, on the right bank of the Selenbrida, here crossed by a bridge of ten arches; 37 miles E. by N. from Trikala; N. Lat. 39° 52', E. Long. 22° 40'. It is composed of unsightly miserable houses, built of clay and wood, and forming streets narrow, crooked, and filthy. Manufactures of silk, morocco-leather, and cotton. A Greek metropolitan church, several mosques, and some bazaars occupying an open area in the centre of the town, are worthy of notice. Pop. about 25,000, three-fourths of whom are Turks.
