a seaport-town of S.E. Norway, in the district of Jarlsberg, situate at the head of a short fiord, into which the Langen Elv debouches a little to the S.E. of the town. The best Norway iron is manufactured here; a considerable trade is carried on in timber and fish. About half a mile S. of the town, on the W. side of the fiord, is Frederiksvaern, a station of the Norwegian fleet, and the seat of a naval academy. Pop. of Laurvik, 3600.
