the name of one of the festivals celebrated in the Roman Catholic, and many of the Protestant churches. It derives its name from an Anglo-Saxon word, signifying spring. As a religious festival, it is intended to commemorate the fasting of our Saviour forty days in the wilderness. It lasts for forty days before Easter, and is therefore moveable with that term.
