LEVEE

Volume 13 · 55 words · 1860 Edition

(French, lever, to rise), is the name given to the ceremonial of receiving visitors on state occasions. The name is derived from the fact of the visit taking place in the morning, i.e., shortly after rising. A levee may be for gentlemen only, or for ladies only; whereas at a "drawing-room" both may be present.
