Volume 13 · 112 words · 1860 Edition

a town of Bavaria, circle of Swabia, situate on three islands in Lake Constance, 100 miles W.S.W. of Munich. It is united with the mainland by a long wooden bridge. It was formerly fortified, but its ramparts have disappeared, and their place is now occupied by flower-gardens. The town contains a castle and four churches, and carries on a brisk trade in grain and wine with Switzerland and Italy. Steamers ply from its harbour to the other lake ports daily. The Romans under Tiberius are believed to have constructed a fortress here, and some remains of an ancient wall and tower are supposed to be a part of it. Pop. about 3500.
