a town of France, capital of a cognominal arrondissement in the department of Saône-et-Loire, on the left bank of the Scille, which is here navigable. The town is composed of antique and grotesque-looking houses, and its streets are irregular and dirty. From its position, however, between the Saône valley and Switzerland, it has gained a certain commercial importance. It has a number of flour-mills, and an extensive trade in cattle, horses, and grain. Pop. (1851) 3785.
