or Loja, a town of South America, in the republic of Ecuador, and department of Assaya, capital of the province of the same name, is situated in a valley of the Andes Mountains, 6768 feet above the level of the sea, in S. Lat. 4°, and W. Long. 79° 24'. It has an extensive trade in cinchona bark, obtained in the mountain forests to the E. of the town, and is considered to be of the finest quality. Pop. 10,000.
