Jose Agostinho de, a Portuguese poet, was born about 1770. He studied for the church, became an Augustinian monk, and in 1810 was chaplain to the Prince Regent of Portugal, and one of the most popular preachers in Lisbon. In 1811 he published Reflections on the Episode of Adamant in the Luciad, in which he convicted Camoens of plagiarism from the Italian poets. He also wrote an epic poem, O Oriente (The Orient), in celebration of the discovery of India; a didactic poem, entitled A Meditação (Meditation); a translation of Horace; and several controversial pamphlets. Macedo died in 1831.
