or MOSKOESTROM, a whirlpool off the coast of Norway to the S.W. of the Lofoten Islands; N. Lat. 67° 48., E. Long. 12. It consists of a swift current, running every six hours alternately from N. to S. and from S. to N., contrary to the motion of the tide, thus producing a wide eddy, the noise of which is heard to a great distance. Whatever small vessel comes within its reach is immediately sucked in, and after being dashed to pieces on the rocks at the bottom is thrown up again by the whirlpool. It is least agitated about the turn of the tide, and it is then only that it can be approached with safety. The diameter of the whirlpool is about 1½ miles.
