a town in Sicily, province of Catania, is situated at the foot of Mount Etna, on a small river about 2 miles from the sea, and 18 miles N.N.E. of Catania. The town is ill built, and, though formerly flourishing, is now in a declining condition. Fishing, however, is still actively carried on; and there is some trade in lime, lava, timber, corn, wine, and fruits. The surrounding country is fertile, and contains many thriving villages. A little to the N.W. stands the village of Mascali Vecchio. There have been found here many curious remains of antiquity, especially of the Saracenic period. Pop. about 4000.
