a town and fortress in the south of India, is situated within the British district of Coorg, of which it is the capital. It was built by Hyder Ally in the year 1773, after he had conquered the country. Upon the conclusion of peace with Tippoo Sultan in 1792 it was given up to the rajah of Coorg; but upon the contumacious conduct of this prince in 1834, it was occupied by a British force under Colonel Lindsay, and the rajah being soon after deposed, the present British establishments were formed.
